RVA Pieces offers free group classes for beginners each week. If you’d like to work with a coach one-on-one, we recommend one of the following coaches in the Richmond area:

Spenser Kearns

Spenser Kearns has been teaching chess to players of all ages and skill levels in Richmond, both privately and publicly, since 2013. A competitive tournament player in his youth and the current President of RVA Pieces, Spenser is a lifelong student of the game with a passion and talent for helping both scholastic players and adult improvers reach their potential in chess.

A typical lesson with Spenser will entail a thorough examination of your recently played games, with a focus on evaluating your thought process for each move played. After that, Spenser will personally prepare exercises in tactics, opening theory, endgame technique, and everything in-between, specifically tailored to your needs as a player.

To book a lesson, email Spenser at spenserkearns@gmail.com.
